Posting Date: Job Schedule: Locations: Degree Level: Job Description: What We Are Looking For The University Chaplain & Dean of Spiritual Life supports Baylor University by leading a comprehensive approach to providing pastoral services to the campus community, speaking into the Christian mission of the University, and helping to create a vibrant, faith formative campus environment that prepares and inspires students toward the pursuit of a life of purpose, meaning, leadership and service.
An earned doctorate in theology, religion, ministry, or a related degree and 15 or more years of full-time relevant experience including general pastoral ministry, faith formation, significant ministry with emerging adults, intercultural engagement, assessment, and the demonstrated ability to lead teams toward goal attainment within organizational settings is required.
Experience in faith formation work in a context of higher education, significant training in pastoral care and student learning, as well as an understanding of Baptist life, other Christian traditions, and major world religions is preferred. Leadership in managing multiple units with an emphasis on teamwork, collaboration, community and belonging, assessment, resource management and continuous improvement is highly preferred. It is strongly preferred that the candidate be an ordained minister.
A deep understand and appreciation of Baylor's Baptist heritage, while at the same time, affirming other Christian traditions that are important to the fulfillment of the Baylor Mission is required. Due to the Baptist Heritage of the university, a preference will be given to candidates with experience as a Baptist minister.
Applicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis. What You Will Do The University Chaplain and Dean for Spiritual Life is a pivotal leadership role dedicated to nurturing the spiritual and holistic development of the Baylor community. This position is responsible for creating and sustaining a vibrant, caring, and supportive environment that reflects the University's Christian mission and values as rooted in its Baptist heritage. The University Chaplain and Dean provides visionary leadership for spiritually formative signature ministries including:
- Chapel programs
- Pastoral care
- Global and local missions
- Chartered religious organizations
- Campus ministry
- Local church engagement
- Guidance to sports and nursing school ministries
The role also offers spiritual guidance and support to students, faculty, and staff, fostering a sense of belonging and community. The University Chaplain and Dean oversees the planning and execution of worship services and other programs and events that nurture the spiritual needs of the University community.
The University Chaplain works closely with Baylor leadership, as the University seeks to develop partnerships and alliances that are faithful to the call to bless God's Church and God's world. This work involves establishing relationships with various religious communities and having a deep understanding of the Church, Baptist life, and the role Baylor can take in impacting the world as a preeminent, Christian Research 1 University dedicated to leadership and service.
The University Chaplain and Dean executes several administrative leadership responsibilities within the Division of Student Life including the management of resources for the Office of Spiritual Life, supervision of staff, and collaboration with other university departments to support the spiritual formation of students, faculty, and staff. Teaching and mentorship are also key components of the role, with opportunities to lead chapels and walk alongside students pursuing vocational ministry or other faith-based careers.
