Description

The Dixon Fire Department offers a challenging and rewarding opportunity for volunteer applicants pursuing a career in fire safety.  Volunteer Firefighters are responsible for a wide variety of fire services including: emergency medical aid, emergency rescue and all other suppression and prevention activities in protecting life and property.

Dixon FD is looking for candidates enrolled in a CA Fire Academy and/or candidates with current CA paramedic license and those that have already completed an Academy.  Candidates who are selected for the Volunteer Firefighter position will be eligible to apply for an internal Firefighter recruitment after 6 months of being in good standing.

Employment Processing:Along with a job-related assessment process, those selected may be subject to a medical exam including drug screen, fingerprinting through the California Department of Justice and a background investigation; and in accordance with Federal law, are able to provide proof of identity and proof that they may legally work in the United States.  It is the policy of the City of Dixon to practice fair and equal employment under the law.

Ideal Candidate

Knowledge and Abilities:

Knowledge of fire suppression and rescue equipment, tools and devices, and their proper use and maintenance requirements; of modern fire prevention and fire suppression methods, principles, practices and procedures; of work hazards and safety precautions associated with the work; and of first aid and CPR.

Ability to learn the geography of the local area including the location of hydrants, mains, and major fire hazards; to understand and act in accordance with departmental policies and rules; to demonstrate a high degree of mechanical aptitude as required in the operation and maintenance of fire fighting and rescue equipment; to drive fire and rescue vehicles with care and safety in accordance with traffic laws and ordinances; to analyze situations and adopt effective courses of action; to think and act quickly and effectively in emergencies; to learn first aid principles and apply them; to learn technical fire fighting principles and techniques and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression. Ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; to understand and carry out oral and written instructions; to establish and maintain cooperative and effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work, and to meet the physical requirements established by the department. 

Education and Experience:

Any combination equivalent to experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. Related college level training is desirable.

Licenses, Certificates and/or Other Requirements:

The candidate shall be at least 18 years of age at the time of appointment.

Must have completed an approved Firefighter I Academy.

Ability to possess and maintain a State of California Emergency Medical Technician Certificate or National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification card and County EMS Authority.

Ability to possess and maintain a CPR Certificate.

Ability to satisfactorily complete Dixon's Fire Department Recruit Class.

Ability to possess and maintain a valid Class C California Driver's License.

A satisfactory driving record is a condition of initial and continued employment.

Residency within a 30-minute response time to Dixon is desirable.

1.  Certification of successful completion of an approved Firefighter I Academy.

2.  Copy of CPAT (CFFJAC only) card dated within 12-months (dated between 1/1/2024 and 1/31/2025. For information: www.cffjac.org
NOTE: If you do not possess, you will be eligible to participate in the Dixon Fire Department Physical Agility testing process tentatively scheduled for 2/15/25There is a ladder portion of the Dixon Agility that all other candidates will participate in on this same date.

3.  State of California Emergency Medical Technician Certificate (EMT).

4.  Possess a valid California Driver's License and satisfactory driving record. (Attach DMV Printout obtained from an official California DMV Office - www.DMV.ca.gov).  The online Driver Record is not an official document, but the City will accept either this or an official copy. The City will also accept an out of state/country DMV record. However, you will need to obtain a California State Driver’s License within 30 days of appointment.

A limited number of candidates whose applications indicate that, among those competing are better qualified in terms of related education; training and experience will be invited to participate in the following assessment activities.

Physical Agility Test

The Dixon Fire Department will host the Physical Agility Test on 2/15/25.All candidates will be required to participate in a Ladder Climb exercise.  If CPAT Card was notsubmitted during the application process those candidates will need to participate in Dixon's physical Agility portion of this exam.

Oral Interview

An Oral Interview process consisting of an interview panel comprised of firefighters who will ask questions of candidates. Tentative dates for Oral Interview are 3/4/25 & 3/5/25.

Candidates will either Pass or Fail the first phase of the assessment process, including the Physical Agility and Oral Interview process. If the candidate passes, they will continue on to the next phase of the process. 

Background

Fingerprinting will be performed by the Dixon Police Department through Human Resources. A background check will be performed by an approved background investigator and will require submission of a Personal History Statement (PHS).  Please take a look at this document ahead of time so you are prepared to complete it timely for the investigator.  This document can be located on the POST website (www.post.ca.gov/Forms).

Medical Evaluation

A medical evaluation will be performed through Occu-Med at the city’s expense.  A fit test will also be performed by the individuals to meet OSHA respiratory laws. Any additional evaluation's needed will be paid at your own expense.

Human Resource Orientation

Human Resources will meet with the new volunteers to advise them of City Policies and Procedures.

40 Hour Firefighter Skill Training

Once the recruits have completed the initial process, they will complete a 40-hour Firefighter Academy where they will learn the policies, procedures, standards, and equipment for the Dixon Fire Department.  

Once the academy is complete, the recruit will be allowed to participate in active duty and will begin to fill volunteer shift assignments.

Benefits

This is a volunteer position with no paid benefits, with the exception of a stipend once placed on "active" status.  The stipend is paid monthly at $50 per shift (taxable) with two shifts per month required.

Future Status as a "Regular Employee"

Candidates who are selected for the Volunteer Firefighter position will be eligible to apply for an internal Firefighter recruitment after 6 months of being in good standing.

Volunteer Firefighters are covered by a life insurance policy and are covered by Workers’ Compensation, consistent with California state law. Click here to view the Volunteer Policy/Procedures.
