Job Description

Haile Gold Mine located in South Carolina is the largest gold mine on the East Coast of America. Our employees are at the heart of all we do. The Underground Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of mining equipment and light vehicles to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operations. This role involves both underground and surface work on mobile and fixed equipment, requiring strong technical expertise, adherence to safety standards, and the ability to work in challenging conditions.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PMs), inspections, and repairs on underground and surface mining equipment, including:
  • Sandvik LHDs, drills, and haul trucks
  • Normet utility and support equipment
  • Caterpillar and Komatsu loaders, and auxiliary equipment
  • Light vehicles and support units.
• Troubleshoot hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical systems to diagnose faults and implement effective solutions.
• Conduct field repairs in underground workings as required, minimizing downtime and ensuring equipment is safely returned to service.
• Follow OEM manuals, technical prints, and site-specific maintenance procedures.
• Complete accurate work orders, PM checklists, and equipment service records.
• Maintain safe work practices at all times, including proper lockout/tagout, JHA completion, and compliance with mine site safety policies.
• Collaborate with operations, supervisors, and other maintenance personnel to prioritize repairs and support production needs.
• Provide feedback on equipment condition, recurring issues, and recommend improvements to reliability and performance.
• Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and assist in training apprentices or junior mechanics.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in underground mining maintenance strongly preferred.
• Hands-on knowledge of Sandvik, Normet, Caterpillar, and Komatsu mining equipment.
• Familiarity with underground support vehicles and light-duty fleet.
• Ability to read OEM manuals, hydraulic/electrical schematics, and technical drawings.
• Strong diagnostic skills with mechanical, hydraulic, can bus and electrical systems.
• Proficiency with laptops and diagnostic software for OEM equipment

• Physically fit and able to work in confined underground spaces.
• Schedule is a 7 on and 7 off schedule, DS/NS and overtime as needed.

Working Conditions

• Work performed both underground in a mining environment and on surface in workshops or yard facilities.
• Exposure to dust, noise, vibration, diesel emissions, and varying temperatures.
• Use of PPE required at all times (hard hat, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, gloves, etc.).
