Research Specialist - Zebrafish Facility

The Baraban Laboratory at the University of California, San Francisco has an opening for a full-time Research Specialist in the Zebrafish Facility. We are a vibrant, translational epilepsy laboratory engaged in cutting edge neuroscience research ().

Responsibilities Include:

  • Providing routine care and husbandry of zebrafish including feeding, water exchanges, cleaning, and health monitoring.
  • Assist in developing and modifying standard operating procedures (SOPs) and practices which promote high-quality, cost-effective operation of the facility.
  • Interacting with postdoctoral fellows, students, researchers, and other team members to provide high quality, responsive animal care services.
  • Perform husbandry duties as part of the team, including breeding adult fish, embryo maintenance, sample collection, genotyping, and fluorescent sorting of embryos.
  • Monitoring supply and equipment inventory to sustain day-to-day operations.
  • Maintaining accurate records including room logs, health reports, animal census, and other records as required.
  • Assist in preparation for all regulatory inspections and site visits including IACUC and AAALAC.
  • Perform minor plumbing tasks related to the zebrafish rack systems and facility infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with aquarium service personnel for any major plumbing or facility repairs.
  • Occasional weekend and Holiday work will be required.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in any of the life sciences (e.g., animal science, biology, microbiology, aquaculture, neuroscience, biology or biochemistry).
  • Basic understanding of molecular biology and PCR-based genotyping.
  • Basic computer skills and a working knowledge of computer programs including Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Prior experience with aquatic animals and a basic understanding of system maintenance relating to aquaculture systems is preferred.
  • Self-motivation, excellent communication and organizational skills.
  • Minimum 2-year commitment.
