The Gitler Lab in the Department of Genetics at Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 1 to contribute to our cutting-edge research in neurodegeneration. This position requires adaptability, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to excel in a fast-paced research environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cell biology, with experience in--or a willingness to work with--mice, including supporting animal care and surgical procedures. Responsibilities include maintenance of mouse colonies and human cell lines (including stem cells) as well as performance of and basic molecular biology techniques (such as molecular cloning, western blotting, and fluorescence microscopy). The LSRP will be expected to work closely with other members of the research team and the supervisor to develop protocols, interpret and analyze the results of experiments, and suggest modifications to procedures when appropriate. The position also includes lab management tasks such as ordering supplies, maintaining lab records, and adhering to safety regulations.

Duties include:

• Independently conduct experiments to gather data for a portion of a major research project; maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes.
• Assist with animal care and mouse colony management, including mouse handling, husbandry and specialized techniques such as retro-orbital injections.
• Conduct routine molecular biology techniques including molecular cloning, western blotting, and fluorescence microscopy.
• Conduct iPSC-related procedures, such as culturing and maintaining mammalian cell cultures and iPSC differentiation.
• Assist with computational analysis of high-throughput sequencing data, but computation experience is not required.
• Contribute to publication of findings as needed.
• Help with general lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support as needed.

The expected pay range for this position is $31.40/hr to $38.89/hr. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Degree in Biology, Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, Computational Biology or related scientific field. Highly motivated candidates of all levels are encouraged to apply.
• Previous laboratory research experience in academia or industry.
• A willingness to learn mouse colony management and work with in vivo mouse models. Previous experience working with mice is strongly preferred.
• Proficiency in computational biology is desired but not required.
• Proficiency with standard molecular biology techniques and mammalian tissue culture.
• Meticulous record keeping and organizational skills.
• Careful attention to detail in all laboratory techniques.
• Strong analytical skills and excellent judgment.
• Ability to work as part of a team and coordinate experiments with co-workers.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

• Bachelor's degree in related scientific field.

• General understanding of scientific principles. Demonstrated performance to use knowledge and skills when needed.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

• Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
• Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
• Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
• Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
• Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
• Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.
• Position may require repetitive motion.
