Job Description and Duties

This position will be housed in one of the following counties:  Sacramento, or Stanislaus County.


This is a Peace Officer position subject to P.O.S.T. requirements. Performs forensic analysis of computers, mobile devices, hard drives, servers, and other digital media to recover deleted, encrypted, or damaged data. Uses specialized software and tools to extract, analyze, and preserve digital evidence in accordance with the best practices and legal standards. Documents all investigative actions and maintain accurate chain-of-custody records for all evidence. Participates in operations and search warrants to seize digital devices and systems related to criminal investigations. Prepares detailed forensic reports outlining the findings, methods, and procedures used in forensic analysis. Ensures that documentation is thorough and accurate for submission to courts, legal terms, or other requesting agencies. Works with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, as well as private sector partners, to share information and collaborate on cybercrime investigations. Participates in task forces, conferences, and professional networks to advance knowledge and improve collaborative efforts against cybercrime. Trains other law enforcement personnel on the basics of digital evidence handling and preservation. Serve as an expert witness in court, explaining forensic processes and findings in a clear and understandable manner to judges, injuries, and attorneys. Works with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to share information and collaborate on investigations. Ensures that all forensic activities comply with applicable state and federal laws, including search and seizure laws (e.g., Fourth Amendment Considerations), Privacy regulations, and evidentiary standards.

Desirable qualifications: ability to collect and use forensic data to identify, analyze and interpret trends or patterns in complex data to provide answers to investigative questions.

This position will be filled as one year Limited-Term, Full Time if the selected candidate needs to complete the Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) requirements.  Upon successful completion, the incumbent will be appointed as Permanent, Full Time.  If the selected candidate has already met POST requirements through a basic academy, then they will be appointed Permanent, Full Time upon hire.
