Job Description

The Head Menâ™s / Womenâ™s Track and Field Coach is responsible for leading and directing all aspects of a NCAA Division III track and field program (Sprints and Jumps experience preferred) that advances the mission of intercollegiate athletics and the University. The head coach supervises assistant coaching staff (2 FT positions); leads student recruiting and retention efforts; coaches student athletes and fosters their skill development; leads coaching plans and implementation at practices and competitions; provides for studentsâ™ safety, health and wellbeing; assures compliance with NCAA, UMAC and university policies; provides sound fiscal management; supervises equipment oversight, scheduling, travel planning, and summer camps; oversees off-season programs and athlete development; and coordinates program communication and fundraising efforts with the Athletic Director, Communications and Marketing, and Advancement. The head coach will build an effective coaching staff with a shared vision, coordinate a comprehensive recruitment program for student athletes working collaboratively with the Office of Admissions, build and retain a diverse and talented team, foster good sportsmanship and a climate of respect, and provide an environment that supports students in achieving their athletic, academic and life goals. 

This is a full time, 10-month, annually renewable appointment.  Starting salary is competitive and negotiable with experience and a record of success. The position carries excellent fringe benefits.

This position is available as a Director of Track and Field / Cross Country or Head Coach Track and Field depending on experience.  For Director positions, a successful record track and field experience is required (typically a minimum of 5 years). 

The successful candidate will demonstrate an appreciation for the mission and value of a public liberal arts college, be self-directed and motivated, work with integrity, and bring skills and abilities needed to advance Cougar menâ™s and womenâ™s track and field, the athletic program, and the University.

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities:

  • A Bachelorâ™s degree and demonstrated effectiveness playing and/or coaching track and field is required (throws experience preferred). 
  • A Masterâ™s degree, college coaching experience and/or participation at the collegiate level are preferred. 

Required qualifications include:

  • Excellent organization, oral and written communication skills, an appreciation for the philosophy of the NCAA Division III. 
  • Strong program management skills.
  • The ability to recruit and retain qualified and talented student athletes. 
  • A demonstrated commitment to studentsâ™ athletic and academic success.
  • The demonstrated ability to build, motivate, and retain a diverse, inclusive, successful team with sensitivity to individuals of all cultural backgrounds, and the capacity to be a visible and engaging leader.
