District Nurse
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The District school nurse is a registered nurse currently licensed under Chapter 6 (commencing with Section 2700) of Division 2 of the Business and Professions code, and who has completed the additional education requirements, and possesses a current credential in, school nursing pursuant to Section 44877.
The school nurse strengthens and facilitates the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of children and by identification and assistance in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to learning in individual children. The major focus of school health services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse is qualified in preventive health, health assessment, and referral procedures.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:
Directly responsible to the Director of Special Services or designee.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Conduct immunization programs pursuant to Section 49403 and assure that every pupil’s immunization status is in compliance with the law, including parental or guardian consent, and good health practice.
Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of pupils to identify specific physical disorders and other factors relating to the learning process, communicate with the primary care provider, and contribute significant information in order to modify the pupil’s education plans.
Interpret the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals directly concerned with the pupil.
Refer the pupil and his or her parent or guardian to appropriate community resources for necessary services.
Maintain communication with parents and all involved community practitioners and agencies to promote needed treatment and secure reports of findings pertinent to educational planning.
Interpret medical and nursing designs appropriate to the student’s individual education plan and make recommendations to professional personnel directly involved.
Consult with, conduct in-service training, and serve as a resource person to teachers and administrators, and act as a participant in implementing any section or sections of a comprehensive health instruction curriculum for students by providing current scientific information regarding nutrition, preventive dentistry, mental health, genetics, prevention of communicable diseases, self-health care, consumer education, and other areas of health.
Assist children and youth, parents, and school personnel in identifying and utilizing appropriate and mutually acceptable private and community health delivery services for professional care and remediation of defects.
Counsel parents, pupils, and school staff regarding health-related attendance problems. Assist in verification of pupil absences if health problem is suspected.
Help parents, school personnel and pupils understand and adjust to physical, mental, and social limitations.
Explore with families and pupils, attitudes, information and values, which affect their health behavior.
Assist parent and pupils to solve financial, transportation and other barriers to needed health services.
Provide specialized physical health care services as prescribed by a pupil’s licensed physician or surgeon or medically related training for the individuals who perform the services which are necessary during the school day to enable the pupil to attend school.
Assist in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites.
Coordinate low incidence requests and materials.
Obtain developmental histories of students recommended for special education programming and services.
Conduct or contract for services, as approved, for vision and hearing screenings as required by Education Code, including initial and triennial evaluations for students with exceptional needs.
Coordinate home instruction programming for health-related home instruction as well as special education-related home instruction.
Serve on special education district compliance and review team.
Participates in Medi-Cal billing program.
Coordinate district medical supplies.
Act as liaison to California Schools for the Deaf and Blind.
Coordinate the tuberculosis (TB) testing for district staff.
Adhere to the National Association of School Nurses and California School Nurses Organization code of ethics and standards, California Business and Profession Codes.
Perform other related duties as assigned.

Demonstrate an effective personal style in training adults.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course work.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
California Registered Nurse License.
California School Nurse Credential.
A Bachelor’s degree (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university.
Current certification in Cardo-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
Training in child abuse and neglect detection as required by Education Code section 44877.
LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California Driver’s License.
Previous experience as a school nurse desirable.
Specialized training in assault response desirable.

SALARY & WORKYEAR:
The work year for School Nurse is 189 days. The days in excess of the teachers’ salary schedule (currently 184 days) shall be paid per diem.
