Job Description

Are you a highly experienced finance professional passionate about making a difference in the nonprofit sector? We are seeking a  Director of Accounting  to join our mission-driven organization in Rochester, NY. This position plays a vital leadership role overseeing budgeting, accounting, and financial reporting functions for a charitable nonprofit organization, including its largest agency, Family and Community Services. Reporting directly to the CFO, you will manage a talented team and ensure the financial health of programs that make a real impact in the community.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting and financial reporting teams, ensuring accurate and timely processes.
  • Supervise financial report preparation, including regulatory filings, quarterly reports, budget reports, monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Coordinate and manage external audits and ensure compliance with all regulatory and accounting standards.
  • Maintain financial systems and records that adhere to best practices and contractual obligations.
  • Develop financial projections and analyses to assist in decision-making across agencies and programs.
  • Enforce and improve financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to enhance operational efficiency.
  • Act as the organization’s financial leader, providing analytical and strategic support to executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the organization’s budgeting process and financial operations of specialized programs, such as the adult guardianship program.
  • Cultivate and manage relationships with external partners, funders, and regulatory agencies, addressing any financial issues.
Required Qualifications
  • Education :

    • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field (required).
    • Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (preferred).
    • CPA certification (preferred).
  • Experience :

    • 10+ years of progressive finance and accounting experience, specifically in the nonprofit sector.
    • 5+ years of leadership experience in a managerial or director role.
    • Expertise in New York State and federal nonprofit funding models and regulations.
    • Proficiency in accounting principles, financial reporting, and revenue cycle management.
  • Core Competencies :

    • Proven ability to lead teams and projects, with excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
    • Credibility to build strong partnerships at all levels of the organization.
    • Strong analytical skills to provide strategic insights and improve financial outcomes.
