Job Description

About Estes Rockets: Estes Rockets has been a pioneer in model rocketry for over 65 years, inspiring creativity, STEM education, and the joy of exploration. We are looking for a Controller to join our team. The Controller will report to the Vice President & General Manager of the company and will work closely with the Executive Staff to plan and direct the accounting operations of the company, while overseeing the financial team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Leadership & Oversight: Lead the finance team in the accurate, efficient, and timely management of the organization’s financial operations. Provide strategic guidance and oversight across all financial activities, ensuring full accountability for funds and expenditures.
  • Budgeting & Cash Flow Management: Directly responsible for the development, monitoring, and reporting of the organization's annual operating budget. Lead short- and long-term budget projections and cash flow forecasts to ensure the organization’s financial health aligns with growth goals.
  • Financial Reporting & Analysis: Produce detailed monthly financial statements and reports, including cost center expense reports and other reports for internal and external stakeholders. Provide analysis of financial performance and strategic insights for organizational leadership.
  • Asset Management: Oversee financial management of fixed assets, ensuring proper tracking, depreciation, and compliance with accounting standards.
  • Audit Management: Serve as the primary point of contact for external auditors and manage the annual audit process, ensuring compliance with relevant financial regulations and standards.
  • Accounting System Management: Maintain and enhance the organization’s accounting system, overseeing all financial operations including journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, cost allocation, and depreciation schedules.
  • Billing & Collection: Oversee enrollment billing and collections processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Staff Leadership & Development: Provide leadership, mentoring, and guidance to the finance team, ensuring high performance and professional growth. Foster a collaborative and positive work environment.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and system efficiencies to support the organization’s financial growth and operational excellence

Skills/Requirements:

  • Experience with accounting systems and financial software.
  • Proven ability to lead and scale financial operations during periods of growth or expansion.
  • Strong leadership, with the ability to develop and mentor teams and collaborate across departments.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information clearly.
  • Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Power BI) and database management tools.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial forecasting and long-term planning preferred.
  • Experience managing finance during a period of expansion or scaling operations.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed, with a strong sense of ownership and accountability.
  • Able to adapt to and thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
  • A positive attitude, with strong interpersonal skills and the ability to foster a culture of collaboration and transparency.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.
  • At least 8 years of progressive finance experience, with a minimum of 5 years in a leadership or supervisory role.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
Salary : $100,000 per year, plus bonus.
Hybrid role : First month of employment is onsite full time. After that, 3 days per week onsite and 2 days per week remote.
