The California Department of Insurance (CDI) is seeking a dynamic Associate Insurance Examiner with experience completing specialized financial insurance examining, and knowledge of general accounting and auditing principles.

Under general direction, the Associate Insurance Examiner (AIE) will (1) conduct  financial examinations of small to medium size insurance companies; (2) assist the  Examiner-in-Charge on the examination of the most complex insurance companies and  holding company groups; and (3) evaluate the propriety of the insurer's operations including  its corporate governance structure and its enterprise risk management framework and  identify relevant controls and/or risk mitigation strategies. In addition, when conducting  financial examinations of a regulated company, travel to a company's place of business may  be required (may be in-state or out-of-state) and may require an overnight stay(s). Some  travel may require the AIE to use private and/or public modes of transportation (i.e.,  automobile, commercial airlines, etc.). The AIE must possess a valid California driver's  license and be able to safely drive and operate a private passenger automobile when  traveling on official state business.


This position is designated under the Conflict of Interest Code. The position is responsible  for making or participating in the making of governmental decisions that may potentially have  a material effect on personal financial interests. The appointee is required to complete Form 700 within 30 days of appointment. Failure to comply with the Conflict of Interest Code  requirements may void the appointment.

Working Conditions

  • The incumbent  must be able to work in a high-rise building. 
  • Requires occasional driving for extended periods of time.
  • The incumbent may telework in accordance with CDI's Telework Policy. Teleworking employees may be required to report to their headquarters office location on designated telework days. Travel expenses are not reimbursed, however other authorized transit subsidies do exist for those who qualify.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate's relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge of:

  • General accounting and auditing principles and procedures.
  • Specialized financial examining practice and procedures as used in insurance examining.
  • Insurance accounting and uniform accounting systems prescribed for insurance companies.
  • Financial organization and practices of various types of insurance companies.
  • Provision of the law governing insurance companies, related legal opinions and court decisions, and departmental policies, rules and regulations.
  • Organizations and operation of the Department of Insurance with particular reference to the insurance examining program.
  • Business law.

Ability to:

  • Apply general acco unting and auditing principles and procedures, specialized financial examining practices and procedures and provisions of the law governing insurance companies, related legal opinions and court decisions, and departmental policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Plan, organize, and direct the work of others.
  • Act in a lead capacity in the financial examinations of accounts and records of insurance companies subject to State regulation.
  • Gather, organize and summarize financial data.
  • Analyze data and draw sound conclusions.
  • Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action.
  • Prepare clear, complete, concise reports.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relations with those contacted in the work.

  • Every 12 months, based on performance evaluation, employees may receive a 5% salary increase until they reach the maximum salary for the position.
